Why Natural Remedies Can Be Effective in Managing Acne

While there are several treatments available, natural remedies can also be effective in managing acne. In naturopathic medicine, the body is viewed as a whole, and treatment involves a combination of body and mind. One of the most important factors in managing acne naturally is through diet.

The Role of Diet in Managing Acne

Foods to Avoid for Clearer Skin

An anti-inflammatory diet is highly recommended. It is important to check for food sensitivities and eliminate gluten and dairy products from the diet. Foods that cause inflammation should also be avoided or limited as much as possible. These include refined carbohydrates such as white bread and pastries, French fries, and other fried foods, soda, and other sugar-sweetened beverages, red meat (such as burgers and steaks), and processed meat (such as hot dogs and sausage), margarine, and lard. Most importantly, it is essential to completely remove white refined sugar from the diet.

The Importance of Avoiding Sugar in the Diet

Sugar in the body can lead to higher serum glucose levels and corresponding elevated insulin levels. Insulin has been shown to increase sebum production, stimulate adrenal androgen synthesis, and increase androgen bioavailability, all of which play a role in the pathogenesis of acne. Instead of sugar, natural sweeteners can be used, such as raw organic honey, real maple syrup, or cinnamon, which has a naturally sweet taste. Eating more fruits is also recommended.

Dietary Recommendations for Managing Acne

Here’s some dietary advice to help manage acne:

  1. Incorporate nutritional yeast into your diet as it is a rich source of B-complex vitamins. B vitamins can improve skin health, manage stress, and enhance sugar metabolism, which can reduce acne and breakouts.
  2. Use healthy oils like coconut, olive, avocado, and hemp (only in cold dishes) in your meals.
  3. Increase your intake of vegetables and fibre, eat healthy proteins, and maintain a low glycemic index diet to promote clear skin.

In addition to dietary changes, other natural remedies that can be helpful in managing acne include stress reduction techniques, such as meditation and yoga, regular exercise, and getting enough sleep. Tea tree oil, which has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, can be used topically on acne-prone areas. Aloe vera gel, which has anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties, can also be applied to the affected areas.

Other Natural Remedies for Managing Acne

Overall, natural remedies can be effective in managing acne. By making dietary changes and incorporating stress reduction techniques, regular exercise, and natural remedies such as tea tree oil and aloe vera gel, individuals can successfully manage their acne and promote overall skin health.
